“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”

As a Political Science major, I often think about the rules and laws we follow as citizens, as a society, and as Catholics. I aspire to one day be a lawmaker myself, but I have come to interpret some of our rules and laws differently than others in our country, in our community, and in our Church. As a person of color, I have come to believe that this nation’s laws were not always made to include, but to exclude. As a Latino, my family may be seen as foreign and outside of the American community. As a bisexual, I may be looked down upon. But I think of Pope Francis and the mercy and understanding he has extended to those most marginalized and discriminated against in our society and around the world. Although the laws of God will never change, I wonder, will the laws of man become kinder, more compassionate with time? God has called each of us to love another, both our friends and our enemies, He never called us to hate one another.
