“‘Master, the one you love is ill.’” When Jesus heard this he said, “‘This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’” – John 11:3-5

In the midst of life’s challenges, it can be difficult for me to keep my focus on God. Often, I find myself with thoughts along the lines of what Martha shares in this passage – “Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,’” John 11: 21-22. Thus, it’s important for me to pay attention when Jesus reminds Martha of his promise of life everlasting. Maybe, through these words, God is inviting me during this Lenten season to deepen my faith and trust in Jesus, rather than being limited by focusing on only the concrete, visible circumstances of my life. Reading God’s Word, attending Mass weekly, and spending time in fellowship can all help, as can reaching out directly to God through prayer.

I pray that God continues to reveal himself to me through all of these means – during Lent and beyond.
