Support Haitian Migrants in Tijuana
Since 1957, the Franciscan Sisters have served the most impoverished people in Tijuana at Casa de los Pobres, an organization in the Colonia Altamira neighborhood. The Jesuits have always had a close relationship with them: countless Jesuits have worked there for short periods, and continue to help support their ministry. Since 2015, the Sisters have been responding to the basic needs of people from Haiti who have been arriving in Tijuana hoping to gain asylum into the US.
Haiti has the highest rate of poverty in the Western Hemisphere. Many Haitian migrants have risked their lives in a perilous journey in search of a better life, traveling by land through various countries toward the US border, often over several months or even years. Upon arrival in Tijuana, most Haitians have nothing – only the clothes on their backs and their important documents. They must endure a long wait for an appointment with US border officials, often taking many months.

To help these vulnerable migrants, the Sisters have a small plot of land that they have dedicated to receiving them. Here, nearly 100 Haitians are currently staying in tents. Although these tents are a welcome place to rest after such a long journey, they are exposed to the wind and cold. Heavy winter storms and unpredictable weather have destroyed many of these tents. The Sisters are hoping to construct sheds, with a solid foundation, for the migrants to live in. Although small, they will provide greater dignity and protection. They also want to continue assisting them with clothes, food, and medical services, as they become oriented to life in Mexico.
Would you be willing to donate money to help the Sisters with their outreach to the Haitian migrants in Tijuana? A donation from our community, or your family, of the following amounts would help the Sisters provide the Haitian migrants with these basic necessities:
- $4000: Large shed to sleep 5 people
- $2000: Small shed to sleep 3 people
- $250: Concrete for foundation of shed
- $100: Sleeping bag and air mattress
- $70: Coat for cold weather
- $50: Shoes
- $40: Blanket
- $25: Pillow
- $20: 10lb bag of rice or beans
Thank you sincerely for your prayers and generosity!
